New General Manager and Head of Finance for international research networking leader

Research networking organisation DANTE has strengthened its senior management team with two new appointments. Matthew Scott is promoted to become General Manager, after seven years as Chief Financial Officer of the organisation. He will work alongside existing General Manager Dai Davies, replacing Hans Döbbeling, who has relocated to Germany.

Succeeding Matthew will be Nicola Anson, who joins DANTE as Head of Finance and Commercial Operations. Previously at Cambridge Enterprise, she brings over 20 years experience in finance and operations, with a strong track record in both the commercial and not for profit sectors.

These additions to the management team reflect DANTE’s continuing strengths in planning, building and operating international research networks. Based in Cambridge, UK, the organisation recently launched the next phase of the pan-European GÉANT network, which links national research networks across Europe and interconnects with other research networks across the globe.

“With international collaboration becoming yet more central to research, fast, high capacity networks are critical to linking scientists, researchers and students across the globe,” said Dai Davies, General Manager of DANTE. “As we embark on the next stage of the GÉANT project, DANTE needs to ensure we have the right mix of skills and experience to drive the organisation forward. The promotion of Matthew Scott and recruitment of Nicola Anson strengthens our senior management team and will help ensure we deliver the high levels of service that our users and partners expect. I’d also like to thank Hans Döbbeling for his sterling work and wish him well in his new pursuits.”

Matthew Scott joined DANTE in June 1996 as Commercial Manager responsible for its financial operations, becoming Chief Financial Officer in February 2003. He has considerable experience in procurement and commercial negotiations having been involved in the procurements for the last three pan-European networks that DANTE has implemented and has extensive knowledge of the international telecoms carrier market. He is qualified as a Chartered Accountant and has an Engineering degree from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.

“Having worked at DANTE for over 14 years I’ve seen the organisation evolve and grow as new projects have expanded research networking across the world,” said Matthew Scott, General Manager, DANTE. “I look forward to using my experience and expertise to work with our partners on world-leading networks, such as GÉANT, that will share knowledge and underpin international collaboration.

Nicola Anson will take responsibility for all aspects of the financial management of DANTE and represent the company to stakeholders including the European Union and Europe’s National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) which jointly co-fund DANTE. She will also manage procurement, IT support and intellectual property rights. Nicola is a qualified Chartered Accountant with two degrees in Life Science .
“I am delighted to be joining DANTE at what is an exciting time for the company,” said Nicola Anson, Head of Finance and Commercial Operations, DANTE. “Research networking is a fascinating area, and I relish the chance to help shape the company’s role in bringing together researchers across the world.”
