News update: GÉANT to host workshop on ‘green’ research networks
15 September 2010 | Cambridge, UK

As part of GÉANT’s presence (Exhibition Stand 3273) at the upcoming ICT2010 event, a workshop is to be held to explore “green” networking technologies, tools and applications. The 90 minute workshop, to be held onsite at the Brussels Expo in room T009 from 14:00-15:30 on Wednesday 29 September, will examine two aspects of green networking:
  • How networks can measure and understand their carbon footprint
  • How networking technology can mitigate carbon emissions amongst the research and education community

Nowadays environmental protection is increasingly at the forefront of public attention. The only way to protect the environment and to curb global warming is through a concerted effort with everyone doing their fair share. Naturally national research and education networks (NRENs) cannot turn a deaf ear to this call. And they haven’t. As part of the GÉANT project, which is committed to promoting energy-saving and ecologically sound applications layered over the GÉANT infrastructure, a team known informally as the ‘GÉANT Green Team’ has been established to undertake a study of the environmental impact of the network.

At ICT2010, the GÉANT Green Team will use a mix of onsite and videoconference (VC) presentations to  showcase how networks can have beneficial synergies with green technologies. With speakers representing the four European NRENs who make up the team – HEAnet (Ireland), PSNC (Poland), NIIF (Hungary) and NORDUnet (Nordic countries), the workshop looks set to be an extremely interesting and topical addition.

No registration for the workshop is necessary, but if you would like more information on GÉANT’s participation please visit http://www.geant.net/Events/ICT2010/Pages/GEANTParticipation.aspx

The workshop will be held from 14:00 to 15:30 on Wednesday 29 September in room T009.
GÉANT is exhibiting at Stand 3273.
